What Bulk Samples Are Used For in REE Projects
Bulk samples play a different role to drill core. Core gives narrow, high-resolution information at a specific point. A bulk (or mini bulk) sample is a much larger volume, collected to understand broader characteristics and natural variability.
This matters in rare earth systems because mineral hosts and grades can change over short distances. A larger composite sample helps avoid being misled by isolated “sweet spots” and gives a more representative view of the material.
A bulk sample helps answer three practical questions:
Variability
Is it consistent, or just local highs?
Mineralogy
Hosts, grain size, alteration.
Testwork response
Realistic processing trials.
Motzfeldt example: At Motzfeldt, around 2.5 tonnes of mini bulk material was collected from the Aries zone. 300 kg of that has been selected and sent for the current mineralogical and metallurgical test programme, which is underway with experienced specialist consultants. This step helps reduce uncertainty before larger programmes, and feeds back into refining the geological model and planning efficient follow-up work.
Reflection: Which is most useful to you, variability, mineral hosts, or early processing insight?
